Matthew 1:18-25
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.
When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.
19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
Lets Look at this passage and Make sure everyone understand the red text... What else stands out that needs to be clarified??
Things I've learned
1. Boettner says Jesus is the Grecianized form of the Hebrew name Joshua
Joshua 1 : 1 - 9
- "No one will be able to oppose you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not desert
you nor abandon you"
- "Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the Law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not
turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may achieve success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart
from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it;
for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will achieve success"
2. 1 Samuel 16
- David was anointed king in Bethlehem, he was a simple shepherd boy called by God
3. Micah 5
- Bethlehem is also called Ephrathah which means fruitfulness
- In Micah 5 : 2 it says " From you Bethlehem, One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel" , and in Isaiah 9 : 6 it says about Jesus
that "the government will rest on His shoulders"
- In 1 Samuel 8 Israel demanded God give them a human king and God told Samuel "they have not rejected you, they have
rejected Me", so Israel rejected God as their king only for them to hope in the promise of the Messiah which is God incarnate/
the Son who "will go forth for Me (God) to be ruler in Israel" and "the government will rest on His shoulders".
4. Matthew 1 : 24
- Since they knew each other not, there was no doubt that Jesus was not the blood son of Joseph
Question
-In Micah 5 : 3,4 I feel confused reading it like I'm missing something important and I'm curious if you could explain it to me when
we meet if possible Allan
- What is an Annunciation again?
Annunciation is an announcement made by an Angel
to Zachariah - Luke 1:11
to Mary - Luke 1:26
to Joseph - Matthew 1:20
Micah 5
Micah announced that Israel will be humbled by foreign powers, and even her judges will bear insults. (vs 1) yet, out of the town shall come the One to be Ruler in Israel. In the coming time of humiliation under foreign powers, God would raise up a great Ruler from a humble place — Bethlehem.
Bethlehem means "House of Bread", and Jesus is the Bread of Life (John 6:35)
Bethlehem Ephrathah is to distinguish it from Bethlehem Nazareth which is much farther north and not where Joseph and Mary travelled too.
