“I Am The Way, The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father but by Me”. (John 14:6)
There is an old story about a noble person who died very suddenly. Immediately his
servant ran to tell the other staff that their master was dead.
The servant asked them where the master would have gone to. The others said, “Why
to heaven of course”. “No,” said the servant, “I am certain he has not gone to heaven.”
Somewhat surprised, the other staff members asked how he could be so certain of this
fact. The servant replied, “Because it is a long way off, and my master never takes a
journey without having first talked about it for a long time. And I never heard him say
anything about going there, nor did I ever see him do any preparations for such a
journey”
The mark of a Christian is their assurance, continual hope and expectation of the
heavenly home that awaits them. It is that absolute knowledge of our eternal destiny
which uplifts and encourages a believer even in the most discouraging times of their
lives.
I remember sitting at the bedside of a godly woman, listening to the excitement in her
voice, knowing that she would soon be with the Lord. And there is nothing to compare
with seeing that hope and expectation being realized. A genuine joy of seeing her
Saviour.
If we know Jesus as our own personal Saviour, we too can have the same wonderful
expectation that awaits each child of the King.
Then we must ask ourselves, do we have this certainty, this assurance? Does the
thought of being in the Lord’s presence excite you with an eager expectation?
Are you able to deliver a good testimony to others about your future journey?
Such assurance can never come simply by being religious or doing religious things.
Nor can this peace be provided simply through loving one another. This confidence and
assurance is born out of brokenness over our sin, and pleading to the Saviour to be
washed from our transgressions.
As Jesus said, “Unless you repent, you too will all perish” (Luke 13:3) Repentance
before Jesus and pleading for His sacrifice to wash you clean is the only means for
such joy. He gives us joy because of what we have obtained through His eternal
forgiveness.
If your faith is real then no one will ever ask, “Which way did they go?
