Two Unspeakable Topics
“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established”
(Romans 13:1)
We are told that there are two things that we should never talk about. One is religion, and the other is politics. We are going to talk about both of them.
The apostle Paul knew what bad government was. He was living under Roman leadership where the political scene was far from ideal.
Despite the problems that were all around him, he knew that the ultimate authority was the Lord, and that those who governed were under His authority. Whatever they did as human leaders, they were accountable firstly to God.
Today, it is still the same. Our leaders are under the authority of God, and they will someday have to answer before God about how they used that authority. For this reason, we should be in daily prayer for the Prime Minister and the government, our military and police forces, our own municipal councils, as well as our school board and the teachers.
Paul tells us that we have to submit to their authority because, by doing so, we are ultimately submitting to God.
Therefore, we should encourage our leaders to realize the responsibility that has been given them; to honour God and those they represent. So today, pray that those who rule over us in this nation will do so with an understanding of their accountability, and that we would as must as possible, honour those who the Lord has sovereignly given that authority too.
